We strongly condemn the arbitrary arrest and detention of Standard Group journalist Collins Kweyu by police officers under unclear circumstances.

The targeting of a journalist for carrying out his professional duties is a blatant violation of press freedom, the Constitution of Kenya, and international human rights standards.

Journalists play a vital role in holding power to account and ensuring citizens have access to information. Intimidation, harassment, and unlawful arrests undermine not only media freedom but also the democratic values of transparency and accountability.

We call upon the police to immediately and unconditionally release Mr. Kweyu and to respect the rights of all journalists to work without fear of reprisal. Further, we urge the relevant authorities, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), to investigate the circumstances surrounding this arrest and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Press freedom is non-negotiable. Any attempt to muzzle journalists is an assault on the public’s right to know.
