Mumias East Member of Parliament  Peter Salasya is now a free man after a Nairobi Court acquitted him of hatespeech charges.

Magistrate Peter Mutai  ruled that the defense provied enough evidence showing that Salasya had taken part in peace campaigns that reached at least 1,000 people as ordered by court.

The magistrate was also informed that the MP is actively running a peace initiative on social media.

Magistrate Mutai noted that the peace efforts were ongoing and that Salasya had committed to sustaining the campaign.

On that basis, the court ordered the withdrawal of the charges under the relevant provisions of the law.

The case had previously not been withdrawn after the court insisted that Salasya first meet specific conditions, including issuing a public apology and participating in a social media peace campaign.

The application to withdraw the case was made by the Director of Public Prosecutions through prosecutor Nora Achieng, who told the court that the matter had been resolved through an agreement between the accused and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
