The World Health Expo (WHX) Nairobi launched today at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, uniting over 5,000 healthcare professionals to forge a path toward more resilient and inclusive health systems in East Africa. The event’s opening day centered on sustainable leadership, financing, and the empowerment of local experts to drive change.

A keynote CEO panel featuring leaders from Kenyatta National Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital highlighted the need for investing in human capital.

Dr. Richard Lesiyampe of Kenyatta National Hospital stated that strengthening institutions requires a focus on training and collaboration, moving from managing people to developing human capital.

Dr. Toseef Din of M.P. Shah Hospital emphasized that compassion must be sustained, noting that leaders must protect the humanity of their teams as fiercely as they protect their patients.

The dialogue on sustainable financing, hosted by the Global Health Association of Kenya, resonated with Kenya’s push towards Universal Health Coverage. Dr. Samuel Oti, a Senior Programme Specialist at the International Development Research Centre, challenged traditional funding models, stating that true progress demands funders “trust, empower, and invest directly in local expertise.”

This vision of local capacity was mirrored in the exhibition hall, where diagnostic firms detailed plans for Kenya’s healthcare landscape. Meshack Oduor Ouma of Randox announced efforts to deploy molecular testing platforms to county-level facilities, ensuring no patient is left behind.

Sara Silva, Country Manager for Bioline, confirmed the company is seeking a local distribution partner to make high-quality surgical sutures accessible and affordable across the country

Concurrently, WHX Labs Nairobi began its specialized sessions on laboratory management, addressing critical issues like workforce development and the integration of AI in diagnostics.

As the summit continues, day two is slated to delve into the transformative potential of digital health and artificial intelligence in expanding access to quality care for all Kenyans.
