Court of Appeal Halts Trial Against Kamani Brothers

The ongoing multi-billion shilling Anglo leasing case has taken a fresh turn after the Court of Appeal’s intervention to pause the trial against businessmen Rashmi Chamanlal Kamani and Deepak Kamani.

The case came for mention before Chief Magistrate Harrison Barqza at the Milimani Anti corruption Court where the court heard that an order of issue of temporary stay had been served by the Appeal Court, pending the determination of a substantive appeal filed by the brothers.

Kamani’s legal team has successfully argued for an expedited hearing. The court noted that the appeal presented compelling grounds and granted all requests contained in their Certificate of urgency.

The brothers through their lawyer Abdinasir Mohammed had moved to the court to challenge a previous High Court ruling that had overturned their initial acquittal and directed that the brothers should enter their defense. This was after the High Court found that the Director of Public Prosecutions had successfully established a prima facie case against the brothers.

The Kamanis are now requesting the Court of Appeal to conduct a thorough independent review of the Magistrates original decision of their acquittal

Following these recent developments, Magistrate Barasa directed that the next mention should be scheduled for May 19th, 2026 for the confirmation of the Court of Appeals final outcome.

The allegations of the case are that the Kamanis along with others, were sourced by the government to supply security equipment to the Kenya Police Laboratory. The brothers have since then consistently denied any involvement with the Mauritius based company , Apex Finance Corporation that was at the center of the scandal.

The DPP however argued that a detail assessment by the appellate court would unfairly influence the trial court’s ability to make independent findings
