Equitax Africa Solutions Limited is seeking to strengthen the digital capabilities of Kenya’s financial services industry through technology designed to simplify lending, banking and financial management operations.
The Kenyan-registered software development firm provides digital lending and core banking platforms targeting Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) and fintech companies.
Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Jackson Maina Ndirangu, the company focuses on developing technology that enables financial institutions to manage their lending operations more efficiently while improving access to financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Digital Solutions for Different Lending Models
Equitax develops and deploys customised lending systems suited to the operational needs of different financial institutions.
Its solutions cover several financing models, including asset financing, logbook loans, SME financing and other specialised digital credit products.
The platforms support the entire loan management process, from application and approval to disbursement, repayment tracking and portfolio reporting.
The company builds its systems around open-source core banking technologies, particularly Apache Fineract and Mifos X.
This approach allows clients to deploy their platforms through cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) arrangements or maintain them on their own infrastructure.
M-Pesa Integration and Digital Access
A key feature of the company’s technology offering is its integration with Safaricom’s M-Pesa infrastructure, enabling financial institutions to process loan disbursements and repayments through mobile money.
Through Customer to Business (C2B) integration, borrowers can repay loans using lenders’ Paybill accounts. The system automatically validates incoming payments, matches transactions and updates the corresponding loan accounts.
The Business to Customer (B2C) integration enables institutions to send approved loan amounts directly to borrowers through mobile money.
Equitax clarifies that it does not operate mobile money wallets or hold customer funds. Its role is limited to providing the technology used to initiate, record and reconcile transactions through licensed mobile money infrastructure.
The platforms also support SMS, USSD and web-based services, allowing customers to submit loan applications, check balances and receive repayment reminders without necessarily requiring smartphones.
Expanding Across Kenyan Counties
Equitax says its solutions are already being used by clients in more than five counties, including Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Kisumu.
Its target market includes microfinance institutions managing individual, group and SME lending portfolios, SACCOs providing member savings and credit services, and fintech businesses developing specialised lending products.
Through its technology solutions, the company aims to help financial institutions modernise their operations, improve loan management and adopt systems that can accommodate changing business requirements.
With Ndirangu at the helm, Equitax Africa Solutions is positioning itself for further growth in Kenya’s financial technology sector, while pursuing opportunities to extend its services into the wider African market.
