Former NEDP official Daniel Onsomu on the spot over Sh2 million fraud case.

A Kibera court has issued a warrant of arrest against former National Economic Development Party (NEDP) Executive Director Daniel Mokua Onsomu after he failed to appear in court to answer charges of obtaining more than Sh2 million by false pretences.

Court records indicate that Onsomu has been absent from court proceedings since June 11, 2026, prompting the court to issue a warrant for his arrest. A further warrant was issued on June 24 after he again failed to attend court as required.

Onsomu is facing charges before the Kibera Chief Magistrate’s Court over allegations that he fraudulently obtained Sh2.05 million from Daniel Nyakundi Osiemo between September 8 and October 6, 2022.

According to the charge sheet, the former party official allegedly received the money with intent to defraud by falsely claiming that he was in a position to help the complainant obtain information relating to a parcel of land.

Prosecutors contend that the representation was false and that Onsomu knew it to be untrue when he received the funds.

The latest warrant was issued after the accused failed to attend a scheduled court mention. His advocate, Mose Nyambega, had written to the court seeking an adjournment of the June 24 proceedings, citing a knee injury sustained in an accident.

In a letter dated June 22, Nyambega informed the court that he was “presently unable to walk and is therefore unable to attend court and effectively conduct the proceedings.”

The court subsequently directed the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Lang’ata Police Station to apprehend the accused and present him before court.

The Kibera case adds to Onsomu’s mounting legal troubles.

In 2022, he was charged before a Makadara court over allegations of obtaining money by false pretences from individuals seeking political and employment opportunities.

In one count, prosecutors alleged that he obtained Sh120,000 from MCA aspirant Ruth Kemunto after falsely promising to help her secure a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nomination ticket ahead of the General Election.

He was also accused of obtaining Sh137,000 from Sophia Gacheri by claiming he could facilitate her recruitment into the National Police Service.

Onsomu denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.

His name also featured in a political controversy involving former Nairobi Governor and NEDP party leader Mike Sonko, who suspended party activities amid claims that some officials, including Onsomu, were soliciting money from aspirants seeking opportunities within the party.

The matter will be mentioned on July 23, when the court is expected to receive a progress report on efforts to trace and arrest the accused.
