Nairobi Court Rejects Bond for Chinese National Facing Extradition to Uganda

A 39 year old Chinese national will remain in Kenyan custody as authorities pursue his extradition to Uganda over an alleged fraud case involving more than UGX4.5 billion, approximately KSh151 million.

Chen Guang, also known as Alex, is wanted by Ugandan authorities over allegations arising from his former employment as a cashier at Diamond Steel Uganda Limited.

A Nairobi court declined to release him on bond after finding that the prosecution had provided sufficient grounds to warrant his continued detention while the extradition case is determined.

Ugandan authorities want Guang to face 30 forgery charges and one count of theft in connection with the alleged loss of UGX4,533,379,400.

The prosecution alleges that Guang took advantage of his access to the company’s financial processes to alter weighbridge bills and payment vouchers used in transactions at the firm.

The Kenyan extradition case was triggered by a request from the Ugandan Government received by the Director of Public Prosecutions on June 10, 2026.

The request, which was dated April 18, 2025, was forwarded through the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice. Uganda is seeking the enforcement of the arrest warrant issued against Guang and his subsequent handover to its authorities to face trial.

Opposing his release, Prosecution Counsel Fatma Shaban argued that freeing Guang could interfere with efforts to have him surrendered to Uganda.

She told the court that there were concerns he could leave Kenya and frustrate the extradition proceedings if granted bond.

With the bond application rejected, Guang will continue being held in custody as the Kenyan authorities proceed with the extradition process.
