Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the armed robbery at Chaiiwali Café in Westlands, Nairobi, as detectives intensify investigations into the daring July 5 attack.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the three Edison Mukama alias Musa Abdul, a 22-year-old Rwandan national,Adens Kikanga, 25 and John Njuguna Githinji, 25 were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation in Mwiki, Githurai, Kiambu County.
Police said the suspects attempted to flee when officers moved in, but they were quickly overpowered and arrested. A subsequent search at a house linked to the suspects in Kimbo led to the recovery of two firearms, each loaded with ammunition.
In a statement, the NPS said “preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to a recent armed robbery incident that was captured on CCTV footage, in which armed assailants robbed members of the public at a popular restaurant along General Mathenge Road in Spring Valley before escaping on motorcycles.”
The robbery occurred on July 5, when armed men wearing face masks reportedly stormed the restaurant after arriving on two motorcycles. The attackers, who were armed with firearms, carried out the robbery in less than a minute before fleeing the scene.
Police said the robbers made away with six iPhones, one Samsung mobile phone and a laptop during the incident.
The latest arrests come just over a week after detectives fatally shot Vincent Ochieng, another suspect linked to the robbery, during a confrontation in Joska, Machakos County, on July 13.
According to police, Ochieng allegedly refused to surrender and instead engaged detectives in a close-range exchange of gunfire before he was fatally shot.
Investigators also disclosed that the breakthrough in the case began after officers tracked one of the stolen mobile phones, which remained active in the Baba Dogo area before it was eventually switched off.
The three suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.
