Beatrice Wangari a woman linked to the death of veteran gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, appeared before the Kibera Law Courts where she sought to be released on bail, arguing that investigators have not provided compelling reasons to keep her in custody.
Through her lawyer, Levi Munyeri, Wangari told the court she was arrested last Friday night at Nairobi Hospital, shortly after Dr. Obwaka collapsed at her Kitengela home.
The defense said she acted quickly,calling a neighbor who alerted an ambulance and contacting the doctor’s personal physician, who directed that he be taken to Nairobi Hospital.
“That was her first reaction when the doctor collapsed in her house,” Munyeri told the court.
Death after reported meeting
Court proceedings heard that Dr. Obwaka had visited Wangari in Kitengela, Kajiado County, where he reportedly developed breathing difficulties after a meal.
The 83 year old, a director at Nairobi Hospital, was pronounced dead on arrival on May 1, 2026.
His death has drawn attention, coming amid a high-stakes governance dispute at the hospital.
Defense challenges DCI application
Munyeri opposed an application by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations seeking 14 more days of detention, saying it lacked merit and omitted key facts.
He told the court investigators had already searched Wangari’s home and vehicle but found no evidence linking her to any offence.
“A person of interest is not necessarily a suspect… she has not even become a suspect,” he said.
Prosecution: Key witness in ongoing probe
The prosecution argued that Wangari was the last person seen with the deceased and could hold crucial information.
They warned she might interfere with witnesses and ongoing investigations, including a postmortem and toxicology tests.
“We believe she has information that is crucial to this investigation,” the court heard.
Court orders 10-day detention
The court ruled in favour of the prosecution, ordering that Wangari be detained for 10 days to allow investigators to complete key aspects of the case.
