The National Police Service has confirmed that two people lost their lives following unrest near Ishihara Level 4 Hospital in Embu County on April 14, 2026.
According to a statement from the Office of the Inspector General, the incident stemmed from what had initially been organized as a peaceful protest by residents of Evurore Ward, who had formally notified police of their plans to demonstrate over concerns at the facility.
Authorities, however, state that the situation later took a violent turn after the gathering was infiltrated by individuals described as disruptive elements. What began as a lawful protest, police said, “degenerated into criminal acts and violence,” leaving several people injured and property, including nearby businesses, damaged.
Police officers deployed to contain the situation reportedly encountered resistance from groups armed with crude weapons such as stones and other projectiles. The Service maintained that the unrest appeared to have been “hijacked by individuals who were never interested in peaceful protests, law or order.”
The police conveyed condolences to the families of the victims, noting that any loss of life is deeply regrettable and unacceptable.
Investigations into the incident are now ongoing, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) notified to independently review the circumstances. The National Police Service has indicated it will cooperate fully to ensure transparency and accountability.
The public has been urged to share any information that may assist investigations through police stations or designated reporting channels, including anonymous platforms.
The Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining public order and called for cooperation from residents as authorities work to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.
