The family of the late gospel singer Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo, has formally petitioned Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions to order an immediate inquest into the circumstances surrounding her death.
In a letter dated 9th December 2025, the family’s lawyers alleged a possible cover-up, citing the denial of critical medical information and an inexplicably hurried burial.
Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, acting on instructions from the singer’s mother, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, wrote to the DPP stating the family’s conviction that her death was not from natural causes.
The legal firm outlined four primary grounds for their suspicion, central to which is the claim that the family was systematically denied access to information.
They stated the deceased had no known history of underlying illness, was denied an autopsy report, was buried in undue haste, and that her relatives were refused medical records detailing what she was being treated for prior to her death.
“The family has had to go through unbearable pain in accepting the fact that the deceased, who had never exhibited any illness would just die mysteriously,” the lawyers’ letter stated.
It further asserted, “The family suspects an evil hand in the death of the deceased based on the following primary grounds.” This direct allegation of foul play frames the family’s pursuit of answers as not merely a personal grievance but a demand for a criminal investigation.
