  • Date of Incident: Tuesday, June 3, 2025 Location: Matisi-Webuye Bridge, Bungoma County Vehicles Involved: Police Land Cruiser from Bungoma Railways Police Station Heavy-duty trailer transporting building materials

BUNGOMA COUNTY — A horrifying road accident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, June 3, 2025, at the Matisi-Webuye bridge involving a police Land Cruiser from Bungoma Railways Police Station and a heavy-duty trailer. The incident has left three police officers dead, sending shockwaves across the local law enforcement community and beyond.

According to eyewitness reports, the police Land Cruiser was heading towards Bungoma when it collided head-on with an oncoming trailer. The trailer, which was carrying building materials, is suspected to have lost control while descending a steep section of the road, crashing directly into the police vehicle.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the police vehicle was completely mangled. First responders and members of the public rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue the officers, but sadly, three of them were pronounced dead on the spot. A fourth officer who was critically injured was rushed to Webuye County Hospital and is currently fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.

Bungoma County Police Commander confirmed the identities of the deceased as officers attached to the Railways Police Unit. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and described the incident as one of the most tragic the department has experienced in recent times.

“This is a dark day for our police family. We have lost brave officers who dedicated their lives to service. We send our heartfelt condolences to the families affected,” he stated.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the trailer may have experienced brake failure, but authorities have launched a full inquiry to establish the exact cause of the accident. Traffic along the Webuye-Matisi stretch was temporarily halted as emergency services cleared the wreckage.

Residents have called on the government to install speed bumps and warning signs at the notorious Matisi stretch, which has recorded several accidents in the past year.

The bodies of the deceased officers have been taken to the Webuye Sub County Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted.

This tragic incident adds to the growing number of fatal accidents involving police vehicles, raising concerns over safety standards, vehicle maintenance, and the condition of Kenya’s road infrastructure.
